EXCELLENT User Rating

This application serves as an effective educational tool for teaching and practicing the ancient lattice multiplication method. Solving lattice multiplication problems not only reinforces mathematical understanding but also offers valuable practice with times tables. The interface is both user-friendly and visually intuitive, featuring customizable options such as color schemes and other adjustable settings. Users can engage with both custom and randomly generated multiplication problems involving small or large numbers.

According to Wired.com:

  • "This was one form of multiplication that I’d never done before, but the app taught me very clearly. It makes multiplying large numbers easier, and allows you to see it all visually."

Endorsed by educators such as Rita Zeni from Ecole Sandy Hill Elementary in Abbotsford, BC, Canada:

  • "The math apps developed by Esa Helttula enable students to practice and reinforce specific computational strategies introduced in classroom instruction, accommodating varying levels of scaffolding as needed. They also provide immediate, individualized feedback that traditional pencil-and-paper exercises cannot always offer. The capacity to adjust difficulty levels enhances student motivation. I find this to be an exceptionally valuable educational resource."

The Lattice Multiplication Method

Lattice multiplication is algorithmically equivalent to traditional long multiplication but utilizes a grid to facilitate calculations. The process begins with multiplying each digit pair, followed by summing along the diagonals within the lattice. This method was introduced to Europe in 1202 through Fibonacci’s Liber Abaci. Originally developed in India and China, lattice multiplication provides a more streamlined and compact approach for handling large numbers, making it faster and often more accessible.

The Lattice Multiplication Application

This app enables users to perform lattice multiplication step-by-step, with animated visuals illustrating each phase. During operation, users will multiply or add digits, with correct answers dynamically moving to their designated positions on the grid. Incorrect inputs are marked by displaying the answer above the keyboard without movement, guiding users toward correct procedures.

Settings Include:

  • Multiplicand with up to 5 digits
  • Multiplier with up to 3 digits
  • Options for custom or random problem generation
  • The current step’s operation can be hidden for clarity
  • Operands for the active operation can be highlighted
  • Available themes: black, gray, and gold
  • Animation speed adjustment
  • Different interface layouts for iPhone and iPad
